This pattern uses simple half double crochet (hdc) to create a soft, slightly stretchy fabric, perfect for a cozy hug around your mug.

Materials You'll Need:

• Yarn Scraps: Worsted weight (#4) yarn in various colors. (This is the perfect way to use up those small leftovers!)
• Crochet Hook: 5.0mm (H/8) crochet hook (or size needed to get a firm but not stiff fabric).
• Button: 1 button (approx. 15-20mm or 0.6-0.8 inches).
• Tapestry Needle: For weaving in ends and sewing the button.
• Scissors: For cutting yarn.

• ch: chain
• sl st: slip stitch
• hdc: half double crochet
• st(s): stitch(es)
• BLO: back loop only
• FO: fasten off

Gauge: Gauge is not critical for this project, but aiming for a fabric that's firm enough to hold its shape but flexible enough to stretch around your mug is ideal. My cozy measures approximately 3.5 inches tall when finished.

Instructions:

1. Foundation Chain (Start with Color A):

   • Ch 14. (This will be the height of your cozy. Adjust if you want it taller or shorter. For me, 14 chains makes a cozy about 3.5 inches tall.)

2. Row 1 (Color A):

   • Hdc in the 2nd ch from hook, and hdc in each ch across. (13 hdc)
   • Ch 1, turn.

3. Row 2 (Color A):

   • Hdc in the BLO of each st across. (13 hdc)
   • Ch 1, turn.

4. Changing Colors (Attach Color B):

   • When you reach the end of Row 2, on the very last hdc stitch, complete the stitch with Color B. (Insert hook into the last st, yo with Color A, pull up a loop, drop Color A, yo with Color B, pull through 2 loops with Color B).
   • Ch 1, turn.

5. Continue Pattern with New Colors:

   • Row 3 (Color B): Hdc in the BLO of each st across. (13 hdc)
   • Ch 1, turn.
   • Row 4 (Color B): Hdc in the BLO of each st across. (13 hdc)
   • Ch 1, turn.
   • Change to Color C (or back to A) at the end of Row 4, similar to step 4.

6. Repeat Rows 3 & 4 (in new colors) until your cozy measures approximately 8.5 inches long (or desired length to comfortably wrap around your mug). This will create the striped pattern. I usually do 2 rows per color for simple stripes.

7. Creating the Button Loop (Last Row):

   • Once your cozy is the desired length, work one final row.
   • Hdc in the BLO of the first 3 sts.
   • Ch 3. (This creates your button loop. Adjust the number of chains here based on your button size - more chains for a larger button).
   • Sk next 3 sts.
   • Hdc in the BLO of the remaining 7 sts. (Or adjust counts to reach the end of your row if your chain was different).
   • FO, leaving a long tail for seaming.

8. Finishing:

   • Seaming: Fold your cozy in half lengthwise, right sides together. Using your tapestry needle and the long tail, whip stitch or sl st seam the raw edges together. This creates a tube.
   • Weave in Ends: Weave in all your loose yarn tails neatly using your tapestry needle. Take your time with this step, especially with multiple colors!
   • Attach Button: Position the button on the opposite end of the cozy, ensuring it aligns with your button loop. Sew it securely in place.
